Hot or Cold....
It is a funny old time of the year; one minute we are throwing off our layers and basking in some of the hottest weather of the season, next minute we are huddled up in our jeans next to the heater.
So how do we manage our clothing choices when the weather is so changeable? The answer is simple, and one of the reasons I just love this time of the year so much: we get to layer. Christchurch weather is so perfect for this and a good chance to experiment with different colours, textures and styles.
- How to Layer:
- To make it simple - there are three main layers:
- Base layer - singlet's, long (or 3/4) sleeved tops and basic tees
- Mid layer - tunics, cardigans, dressy tops
- Top layer - coats, jackets, cardigans.
- In warmer weather we may only get as far as a base layer, and in the evening pop on a mid layer cardigan. However when the temperature drops we may need 2 base layers, a mid layer and a top layer. If it heats up as the day wears on then off come the top two layers and the base layers still provides interest.

Trans-seasonal basics
- Tunics and leggings
- Yes they are still in the shops, a diehard fashion and can be worn with 3/4 leggings, ballet flats and a cardy for a warm day and layered up with long sleeved tops, skinny jeans and a coat when it is cooler.

- Cardigans
- These are one of my favourite garments! They provide warmth, interest and when your arms are not your best feature - modesty. Invest in one today - there are some fabulous ones in store at Merivale right now! Try Veronika Maine, Vincent, Rouche and Jean Jones to name a few. Go for a colour - brighten up your autumn.
- Boots
- There are some fantastic thigh high versions out there which can be folded down for maximum versatility. If you want the more classic boot try wearing them with bare legs and a summer dress for a modern look. Boots are also great when the temperature stop in the mid teens but it is not quite cold enough to wear tights!
- Close fitting tops
- Arrgghh I hear some of you say - these are to be worn for length, warmth and to provide you with an interesting twist to your outfit. Mix colours, lift the black, pop a colour underneath your tunic or dressy top. Save them for true layering. Try Max, Witchery, Quinns, Kimberleys and Sassys for some good colour and variety in basic layering tops. Vincent also has the fantastic Mela Purdie range which has great basics for travelling.
Have fun, experiment and happy shopping.
